Coffee bars have gone from a nice extra to one of the first things clients ask for. The reasoning is usually the same: the machine, the grinder, the beans and four kinds of mug have colonised a corner of the counter, and nobody wants to look at it.
Start with where, not what
The best coffee station is out of the main cooking triangle. If someone can make a flat white at seven in the morning without standing between the fridge and the stove, you have chosen the right wall. A butler pantry, the end of a run of cabinetry, or a bank of tall units near the breakfast area all work well.
Decide on plumbing early
This is the decision that has to happen before cabinetry is ordered, not after. A plumbed machine or a small filtered tap is a genuine luxury, but running water and a drain to that wall is a framing and rough-in conversation. Bolting it on later costs several times what it costs to plan in.
Power is usually the thing people underestimate
A grinder, a machine and a kettle on one outlet is not enough. We generally run a dedicated circuit with outlets inside the cabinet itself, so everything can stay plugged in behind a door and the counter stays clear.
Storage that matches the ritual
Shallow drawers for beans and pods, a pull-out for the mugs you actually use, and somewhere to hide the second grinder you swear you will start using again. If you are putting in a beverage refrigerator, put it here rather than in the island, so the whole business of drinks happens in one place.
Finishes can afford to be braver
A coffee bar is a small, contained area, which makes it the safest place in the kitchen to do something you would not do across the whole room. A different cabinet colour, an open shelf in walnut, a run of patterned tile at the back. It reads as deliberate rather than reckless because the rest of the kitchen stays calm around it.
